Tobacco Warehouse hosts art show

An amazing exhibition of original works organised by local arts organisation Shuffle is on show at Tobacco Warehouse.  Run by Liverpool-based artists Josie Jenkins and Max Mallender, Shuffle transforms empty spaces into cultural hotspots with cutting-edge art, design and music. Their mission, to elevate the city’s artistic voice, connecting its people to contemporary art and encourage property owners to unlock the potential of their spaces for the city’s creative evolution.
Taking over most ground floor space, Shuffle launched their three weekend stay on 27th April, running into the evening with DJ sets, art performances, delicious food, and a licensed bar. The exhibition brings together a diverse range of visual art which includes large scale sculpture by Manchester based Joe Hancock, ‘hard edge’ abstract painting from Liverpool based Gareth Kemp, the mysterious paintings of Manchester based Karol Kochanowski  and exquisitely realistic portrait drawings by Liverpool based Colette Lilley.

The bar and DJs may have been replaced by coffee and a more quiet backdrop, but the exhibition remains open, Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May 12 till 6pm. Photography by @BenjaminNuttall

"Britain’s 10 best value cities for quality of life in 2024

"Junior doctor Emily Wyman has just graduated from Liverpool University and rather than return to her home city of Sheffield has bought a two-bedroom apartment in Liverpool in Tobacco Warehouse on Stanley Dock. It’s walkable to the city centre, close to the new Everton stadium (under construction) and the Kingsway tunnel that runs under the Mersey to the Wirral.

Tobacco Warehouse is Liverpool’s largest listed building and was its largest brick-built warehouse. Emily’s loft-style home is one of 598 and opposite the Titanic Hotel and spa.

Prices start from £265,000 which Emily, 21, managed through inheritance left by her grandparents. “Liverpool is constantly alive,” she says. “Whether it’s nightlife, events or independent markets, I could never be bored.” She takes advantage of the free activities the city has to offer, which include long walks along the coastline and trips to Sefton Park, the Grade I listed, 200-acre common which looks more like a natural rural landscape than an urban park. Her favourite wine bar for “date night” is Ropes & Twines on Bold Street and Manifest restaurant for a special treat.

"Revealed: the top 10 UK cities for house price growth

"There’s a rekindled buzz on Merseyside that has been building since it was European City of Culture in 2008, through to this summer’s hosting of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Much of this is centred around the docks where major regeneration is taking place including Everton FC’s £500m new stadium and a cruise ship terminal. Nearby Ten Streets is one of the UK’s fastest growing digi-tech clusters.

The latest Zoopla data reveals that Liverpool is the fastest moving market in England, with the typical seller agreeing an offer within 17 days – half the UK average.

In a vast former Tobacco Warehouse in Stanley Dock, new flats cost from £265,000, but other areas on the up include Waterloo, Aigburth, Sefton Park, Toxteth and Anfield, where the average terraced house – popular with investors for 7pc yields – sells for £106,979, according to Rightmove."

"Transforming old industrial buildings is helping solve Britain's housing shortfall

"Warehouses, with their vast amounts of space, can make interesting conversions. In Stanley Dock, Liverpool, the Tobacco Warehouse is a third developed and has been re-formed into apartments that are in most cases larger than the average three-bedroom house. With their brick walls, iron columns and concrete ceilings, two and three-bedroom apartments cost from £265,000."

"Best places to live for first-time buyers. If you want to plant a foot on the property ladder, these locations offer vitality and value for money.

"Close to the city centre, it’s worth keeping an eye on the latest round of dockland regeneration, where the new Everton football stadium is taking shape and the neighbouring Ten Streets area is emerging as a creative district for start-ups, artists and designers.

Emily Wyman, a junior doctor, bought a two-bed flat in Stanley Dock’s recently converted local landmark Tobacco Warehouse (flats, many of which have great views and double-height ceilings, cost from £265,000), helped by a small legacy from her grandparents.

“I very much saw myself making a home in Liverpool, even after I graduated to be a doctor,” she says. “I knew I wanted to live in the city centre, close to most of the main hospitals and leisure and retail options. I now commute out to the local hospitals and community healthcare centres, so the location is perfect.”

"Ferry cross the Mersey: homebuyers choose Liverpool’s waterfront

"From her new apartment in Tobacco Warehouse — the largest brick building in the world — Charlotte Beddows, 29, is relishing her front-row views of the Liverpool waterfront. “It’s amazing to watch the cruise ships lit up at night on the river Mersey and the water polo on Stanley Dock,” says Beddows, an administrative assistant who moved from Coventry to Liverpool with her husband Alex, a games designer, earlier this year.

“We’re only a mile or so from the city centre . . . but you get a quietness here from being slightly set apart.” In a mass move decided during lockdown, a dozen of their friends have joined them in the city.

“We’re all in our late twenties and felt that Liverpool seemed like such a young city with so much going on and we could get a lot more space for our money than in Coventry,” says Beddows, who paid £350,000 for a two-bedroom flat with brick walls and exposed steel beams."

"The Eurovision effect: how Liverpool is changing its tune

"Few British cities can rival the musical heritage of Liverpool – and as the Eurovision Song Contest arrives back in the UK after 25 years, Merseyside is getting ready for its moment in the spotlight. An extra 150,000 visitors are expected to descend on the city for the sell-out event this weekend.

King Charles recently paid a visit to Liverpool, where dozens of cranes in the docks area show the major regeneration of the former warehouses at what was once busiest port in the world. Close to the popular Titanic Hotel in Stanley Dock, Everton FC’s £500 million stadium is taking shape, along with a new cruise ship terminal. Meanwhile the city’s arts quarter – Ten Streets – is one of the UK’s fastest growing digi-tech clusters and expected to produce more than 2,500 new jobs.

The city centre had more than its fair share of rogue developers. But the latest projects are attracting attention for the right reasons, with Tobacco Warehouse at Stanley Dock representing the largest conversion of a historic building into flats in UK history (538 properties). Large two-bedroom duplex flats with exposed brickwork are selling to first-time buyers, downsizers and some second-home owners – most buyers are owner-occupiers"

"Liverpool’s Tobacco Warehouse commissions local artist Sophie Green

Pat Power, Director, Stanley Dock Properties, commented: ”Sophie’s illustrations captured our attention, both in respect of their vivid style and subject matter – it is clear that she is passionate about art, Liverpool, its people and the LGBTQ+ community...

“The final drawing is amazing, so much so that we commissioned a further seasonal version, to create a limited edition greetings card for residents at Tobacco Warehouse, many of whom will be celebrating their first Christmas there, as well as for new home owners completing and moving in in the run up to Christmas.”"

"It might be eight years old but this vast converted warehouse is shipshape and one of the city’s swankiest stays

"Unquestionably one of the city’s swankiest hotels, Titanic opened in 2014 after a £36m rebuild and restoration of a warehouse dating from the 1850s at Stanley Dock. The architects salvaged industrial features including giant ironwork goods doors, steel girders and restored windows. Titanic references are everywhere, from deck plans of the liner above your bed to White Star Line posters in the Rum Bar...

The 153 rooms are split into five categories, but even the smallest are spacious at 56 sq m, with high ceilings. The best rooms have views of the Mersey but other vistas include the Stanley Dock Tobacco Warehouse opposite. Decor is unfussy, with a crowd-pleasing colour palette of white Egyptian cotton bedding, brown leather chairs and light oak wooden desks and sideboards. Bathrooms are also huge, with walk-in showers and double sinks, although not all rooms have a tub."

"Why are homebuyers ditching the British countryside for the city? Liverpool is a post-pandemic hotspot outpacing London

"Is the recent love affair with the UK’s rural regions fading? Latest research by property advisers Savills suggests that – for the first time since December 2020 – annual house price growth in well-connected urban markets is higher than that in more rural settings.

The data shows that, on average, the UK’s prime country and coastal markets continue to grow, gaining 1.2 per cent over Q2 2022, following a 2 per cent increase in the first quarter – but at a far slower rate than the 16 per cent growth recorded since the start of the pandemic."

"When competed in 1901, this was the biggest brick warehouse in the world.

During the Second World War it was converted into a US military base responsible for the storage and shipment of supplies to US army personnel based in the UK while preparing for the D-Day landings.

One of the floors became a US field hospital, another stored valuables captured from Nazi ships, and such was its importance that it was toured by US first lady Eleanor Roosevelt in 1942.

It’s now being repurposed as 550 spacious one, two and three-bedroom loft-style apartments. From Stanley Dock properties."

"I’ve been chronicling Liverpool’s renaissance for 40 years – here’s why the city’s Unesco status should not have been removed

"Unesco has voted to delist Liverpool’s city centre and waterfront, which has held world heritage status for the past 17 years. The decision comes after a protracted row between the United Nations organisation and Liverpool City Council over planned development around the site.

The challenge involved with big cities like Liverpool having a Unesco world heritage site is how to balance the inheritance of the past and the needs of tomorrow. Liverpool argues that preserving its outstanding cultural heritage must be reconciled with the need for investment in an area with some of the greatest economic and social challenges in the UK – even in Europe."

"Everton could be starting the 2024/25 season in a new home after its Bramley Moore Docks stadium takes a massive step forward.

The Toffees dreams of creating a world class stadium on the waterfront have come true.

Robert Jenrick, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, has been reviewing the club’s plans since Liverpool City Council’s planning committee unanimously approved the development on February 23.

In a statement, the club said: “The decision to approve a new 52,888-capacity waterfront arena allows the club to complete its agreed acquisition of the site from Peel L&P and the funding solution for the project, ensuring the club can begin to make the plans a reality.”

It is estimated that the stadium development and plans for a Goodison Legacy will bring a £1.3bn boost to the economy, create more than 15,000 jobs and attract 1.4m new visitors to the city."

“Liverpool Docklands, Conservation or Construction?

"1848 was an "Annus Mirabilis" for the growth of Liverpool’s docks. It was the year that Stanley, Collingwood, Salisbury, Nelson and Bramley-Moore Docks were all opened on the same August day, built to the design and under the supervision of Jesse Hartley, Dock Engineer to the Port of Liverpool from 1824 to 60. It was a remarkable achievement of civil engineering and enterprise: approximately 4,000 men working for four years to excavate three million cubic yards of rock and mud. The system of five interconnected docks was opened just two years after Prince Albert opened the Albert Dock adjacent to the town centre, built in the tidal margins of the River Mersey and close to the site of the world’s first commercial enclosed wet dock of 1715."
