Shuffle Exhibition - 2024/5/6

Tobacco Warehouse hosts art show

An amazing exhibition of original works organised by local arts organisation Shuffle is on show at Tobacco Warehouse.  Run by Liverpool-based artists Josie Jenkins and Max Mallender, Shuffle transforms empty spaces into cultural hotspots with cutting-edge art, design and music. Their mission, to elevate the city’s artistic voice, connecting its people to contemporary art and encourage property owners to unlock the potential of their spaces for the city’s creative evolution. 
Taking over most ground floor space, Shuffle launched their three weekend stay on 27th April, running into the evening with DJ sets, art performances, delicious food, and a licensed bar. The exhibition brings together a diverse range of visual art which includes large scale sculpture by Manchester based Joe Hancock, ‘hard edge’ abstract painting from Liverpool based Gareth Kemp, the mysterious paintings of Manchester based Karol Kochanowski  and exquisitely realistic portrait drawings by Liverpool based Colette Lilley.
The bar and DJs may have been replaced by coffee and a more quiet backdrop, but the exhibition remains open, Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May 12 till 6pm. Photography by @BenjaminNuttall

It’s walkable to the city centre, close to the new Everton stadium (under construction) and the Kingsway tunnel that runs under the Mersey to the Wirral.

Tobacco Warehouse is Liverpool’s largest listed building and was its largest brick-built warehouse. Emily’s loft-style home is one of 598 and opposite the Titanic Hotel and spa.

Prices start from £265,000 which Emily, 21, managed through inheritance left by her grandparents. “Liverpool is constantly alive,” she says. “Whether it’s nightlife, events or independent markets, I could never be bored.” She takes advantage of the free activities the city has to offer, which include long walks along the coastline and trips to Sefton Park, the Grade I listed, 200-acre common which looks more like a natural rural landscape than an urban park. Her favourite wine bar for “date night” is Ropes & Twines on Bold Street and Manifest restaurant for a special treat.

Last week’s ceremony saw Liverpool’s Titanic Hotel win the gold award for large hotel of the year. It sits in a former warehouse on the city’s Stanley Docks overlooking the River Mersey. On its website, the Titanic Hotel describes itself ‘an attraction in itself and an asset for the city’, combining contemporary design with its original Victorian architecture. “We’re only a mile or so from the city centre . . . but you get a quietness here from being slightly set apart.” In a mass move decided during lockdown, a dozen of their friends have joined them in the city.

“We’re all in our late twenties and felt that Liverpool seemed like such a young city with so much going on and we could get a lot more space for our money than in Coventry,” says Beddows, who paid £350,000 for a two-bedroom flat with brick walls and exposed steel beams."

"Unquestionably one of the city’s swankiest hotels, Titanic opened in 2014 after a £36m rebuild and restoration of a warehouse dating from the 1850s at Stanley Dock. The architects salvaged industrial features including giant ironwork goods doors, steel girders and restored windows. Titanic references are everywhere, from deck plans of the liner above your bed to White Star Line posters in the Rum Bar...

The 153 rooms are split into five categories, but even the smallest are spacious at 56 sq m, with high ceilings. The best rooms have views of the Mersey but other vistas include the Stanley Dock Tobacco Warehouse opposite. Decor is unfussy, with a crowd-pleasing colour palette of white Egyptian cotton bedding, brown leather chairs and light oak wooden desks and sideboards. Bathrooms are also huge, with walk-in showers and double sinks, although not all rooms have a tub."

"Everton could be starting the 2024/25 season in a new home after its Bramley Moore Docks stadium takes a massive step forward.

The Toffees dreams of creating a world class stadium on the waterfront have come true.

Robert Jenrick, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, has been reviewing the club’s plans since Liverpool City Council’s planning committee unanimously approved the development on February 23.

In a statement, the club said: “The decision to approve a new 52,888-capacity waterfront arena allows the club to complete its agreed acquisition of the site from Peel L&P and the funding solution for the project, ensuring the club can begin to make the plans a reality.”

It is estimated that the stadium development and plans for a Goodison Legacy will bring a £1.3bn boost to the economy, create more than 15,000 jobs and attract 1.4m new visitors to the city."

"1848 was an "Annus Mirabilis" for the growth of Liverpool’s docks. It was the year that Stanley, Collingwood, Salisbury, Nelson and Bramley-Moore Docks were all opened on the same August day, built to the design and under the supervision of Jesse Hartley, Dock Engineer to the Port of Liverpool from 1824 to 60. It was a remarkable achievement of civil engineering and enterprise: approximately 4,000 men working for four years to excavate three million cubic yards of rock and mud. The system of five interconnected docks was opened just two years after Prince Albert opened the Albert Dock adjacent to the town centre, built in the tidal margins of the River Mersey and close to the site of the world’s first commercial enclosed wet dock of 1715."
